Taiwan Comments on US Arms Sales and $14 Billion Package
Taiwan's Defense Minister stated that ongoing US arms sales are continuing while confirming that a massive $14 billion package remains on hold.
Taiwanese Defense Minister Wellington Koo stated that there are no changes to existing arms sales from the US and that discussions are ongoing. However, in the shadow of tensions with China, it was announced that a major $14 billion weapons package is currently being withheld.
Existing Arms Sales and Contacts
Speaking to reporters in Taipei, Taiwan's Defense Minister Wellington Koo stated that they remain in constant contact with the US regarding individual agreements and cooperation.
Minister Koo emphasized that they have not yet received any notification from the Washington administration regarding a change in sales policies.
The Suspended Major Weapons Package
While the current process continues, it was noted that the record-breaking $14 billion giant weapons package planned for the island is currently on hold.
It is known that this pause began following the summit held in Beijing between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump.
Status of F-16V Fighter Jets
On the other hand, it was officially reported that the 66 advanced F-16V fighter jets ordered by Taiwan have reached the production stage ready for delivery.
It was stated that deliveries previously planned for 2024 were delayed due to the pandemic and disruptions in the production line.
Regional Tensions and the Role of the US
US arms sales to Taiwan continue to be a major source of tension between Washington and Beijing, which views the island as its own territory.
US law requires Washington to provide Taiwan, which it does not officially recognize, with the means to defend itself, and the island's administration makes these purchases for defensive purposes.
