The 10 percent rule in school backpacks: Incorrect carrying threatens the spine
Ahead of the new academic year, experts warned families about the risks of improper school backpack selection and incorrect carrying habits on children's spine health.
As the new academic year approaches, experts from Ankara Bilkent City Hospital have warned that heavy and improperly carried school backpacks can negatively affect children's spine health.
Critical Limit for Backpack Weight
Experts stated that the critical limit for backpack weight is 10 percent, noting that pain complaints are more frequently observed in loads exceeding 15 percent of body weight.
Sample Weight Calculation
According to the statements made, for a child weighing 30 kilograms, the ideal backpack should be around 3 kilograms, and this weight should not exceed 4.5 kilograms at most under special circumstances.
Correct Carrying Methods
It was emphasized that the backpack must be carried with double straps and close to the body, and carrying it on a single shoulder makes the load asymmetrical and leads to muscle pain.
Posture Disorders and Their Effects
It was noted that heavy backpacks cause the child's torso to lean forward, creating fatigue and pain in the neck, shoulder, and back muscles, and leading to temporary changes in gait and posture.
Screen Use and Sitting Habits
It was reported that, in addition to sitting in incorrect positions at the desk for long periods, constantly leaning forward while using phones and tablets also harms children's spines.
