Tigst Assefa Misses Record at Berlin Marathon, Guye Adola Wins
Tigst Assefa missed the world record due to cramping near the finish line but secured the women's victory with a course record; in the men's race, Guye Adola claimed victory.
Competing in the women's category at the Berlin Marathon held in Germany's capital, Tigst Assefa lost the chance to break the world record due to cramps she experienced as she approached the finish line. Despite this, Assefa broke the course record to claim the top spot in Berlin for the third time, achieving the third-fastest time in history. Guye Adola finished first in the men's race.
Assefa's Record Attempt and Cramp Obstacle
Tigst Assefa raced to reclaim the world record at the Berlin Marathon and managed to maintain her record pace up to the fortieth kilometer. However, severe cramps she experienced just a short distance from the finish line caused the Ethiopian athlete to fall short of her record target.
Course Record and Third Berlin Victory
Despite the physical challenges she faced, twenty-nine-year-old Tigst Assefa gritted her teeth and crossed the finish line to set a new course record with a time of two hours, eleven minutes, and four seconds. With this result, Assefa secured her third marathon victory in Berlin, following her wins in 2022 and 2023.
Ethiopian Dominance in the Women's Category
Bedatu Hirpa, who secured second place in the race, crossed the finish line nearly six minutes behind the winner and was followed by Dera Dida. It was notable that the top five positions in the women's category were entirely occupied by Ethiopian runners.
Guye Adola Wins the Men's Race
In the men's competition, thirty-five-year-old Ethiopian athlete Guye Adola finished the marathon in first place with a time of two hours, two minutes, and fifty seconds. This success was recorded as Adola's second victory in the German capital, following his win in 2021.
Other Names on the Men's Podium
Following Guye Adola, another Ethiopian athlete, Gemechu Dida Diriba, took second place with two hours, three minutes, and nineteen seconds. Tanzanian athlete Gabriel Gerald Geay claimed the third step of the podium with a time of two hours, three minutes, and fifty-nine seconds.
Weather Conditions and Notable Absences
Due to the high temperatures experienced during last year's marathon, the start times were brought forward this year, and the race took place under nearly flawless weather conditions accompanied by the autumn sun. World record holder Sabastian Sawe could not participate in the race due to an injury and attended the event as an honorary guest.
