20 Years of Tuition Costs at National Universities

Changes in tuition and fees at national universities over the past two decades reveal a significant cost increase that directly impacts the budgets of students and families.

Twenty Years of Tuition Increases

University costs have generally followed an upward trend over the past two decades, with the total bill increasing by thousands of dollars along with additional expenses such as housing, food, and transportation. Families looking to limit student loan debt often choose in-state schools.

Rates Unadjusted for Inflation

When not adjusted for inflation, tuition and fees at private national universities have increased by approximately 102 percent. Over the same period, out-of-state tuition at public national universities increased by 89 percent, while in-state tuition rose by approximately 99 percent.

Changes Adjusted for Inflation

When accounting for inflation, private national university tuition is shown to have increased by approximately 26 percent. At public national universities, out-of-state fees grew by 18 percent, and in-state fees saw growth of approximately 24 percent.

Recent Developments and Periodic Declines

Average tuition and fee prices, which continued their climb for years, have also shown a downward trend in recent years. For example, between the 2021-2022 and 2024-2025 academic years, fees for in-state students decreased by approximately 7.6 percent when adjusted for inflation.
