Ugandan President's Son Kainerugaba to Run in 2031 Election

Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the military chief of Uganda and son of long-serving President Yoweri Museveni, has announced that he will compete for the highest office in the 2031 presidential election.

Announced Candidacy for 2031

Ugandan military chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba stated in a social media post that he will run in the 2031 presidential election and that they will win.

Emphasized Father's Support

Fifty-two-year-old Kainerugaba stated that he aims to achieve a large share of the vote in the elections with the support of his eighty-one-year-old father, Yoweri Museveni.

Past Political Role

Kainerugaba, who leads the political pressure group Patriotic League of Uganda, had announced that he would run in the elections last January as well, but later abandoned that decision.

Opposition Status

While leading opposition figure Bobi Wine fled to the U.S. at the beginning of the year fearing for his life, Kizza Besigye has been imprisoned since 2024.

Position of the Current Administration

Regarding whether President Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, will run for a new term, government spokesperson Alan Kasujja stated that a decision will be made when the time comes.
