US Democracy Indicators at Lowest Level in Fifty Years
According to a global think tank report, core democracy indicators in the US have fallen to their lowest level in 50 years, as part of a worldwide weakening trend.
In an annual report published by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, it was announced that democracy indicators in the United States have dropped to their lowest level in the last fifty years.
Fifty-Year Decline in Democracy Indicators
The Global State of Democracy report, prepared by the Stockholm-based International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, presented data covering 174 countries. It was emphasized that the decline in the US is particularly pronounced and part of a broader global trend.
Executive Branch and the Rule of Law
The report stated that the actions and threats of President Donald Trump's administration have undermined the rule of law. It was noted that power was rapidly concentrated in the executive branch and used for personal goals and retributions.
General Global Trend of Decline
Worldwide, judicial independence, fair elections, freedom of expression, and the state of the press have fallen to their lowest levels in at least thirty years. The year 2025 marked the eleventh consecutive year in which the number of backsliding countries exceeded those of advancing democracies.
Conflict Risks and Positive Developments
The Uppsala Conflict Data Program recorded that 2025 was the year with the most severe conflicts since 1946. Conversely, some positive developments took place in countries such as Australia, Syria, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
