US Signs Security Agreement to Establish New Military Bases in Greenland
A new security agreement has been signed between the US, Denmark, and Greenland aimed at ending tensions in the Arctic region.
Within the scope of the security agreement signed with the participation of US, Danish, and Greenlandic leaders during the United Nations General Assembly, it was decided to establish new military bases in Greenland and expand the Pituffik Space Base.
Signing Process of the Agreement
A new security agreement aimed at lowering tensions in the Arctic region between the US, Denmark, and Greenland was signed during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly with the participation of the parties.
Sovereignty and Right to Self-Determination
In the signed security agreement, while the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark are explicitly reaffirmed, the right of the people of Greenland to self-determination under international law is also recognized.
New Military Base Investments
According to the official details released, the US will modernize and expand its operations at the Pituffik Space Base and will also establish new military bases in the Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig regions.
Controversial Decision on EU Sanctions
On the other hand, while the European Union extended its existing restrictions against Russia for a period of three years, it removed two Russian billionaires, Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman, from the sanctions list.
