WCC Retirees and Leaders Gathered for Global Developments

World Council of Churches retirees gathered on the occasion of news sharing, prayers, and the Bossey anniversary to discuss the role of churches in global conflicts.

The Global Role of Churches

Rev. Dr. Anne Burghardt, general secretary of the Lutheran World Federation, stated that churches are called to serve rather than withdraw in the current global situation. It was emphasized that churches must provide guidance on responsible theology, peace, and reconciliation during this period.

Broadly Attended Gathering

Hubert van Beek, former WCC executive secretary, stated that 45 people attended the event, showing a record level of interest. It was noted that the meeting took place immediately after the election results in Germany.

Stance Against the Far-Right

The stance that churches should take against rising far-right developments in Europe, especially in Germany, the USA, and Latin America, was among the urgent questions.

Q&A Session

During the Q&A session moderated by Hubert van Beek, the war in Ukraine, relations with specialized ministries, and the voices of youth within the ecumenical movement were addressed.
