Wife of Imprisoned Academic Asks Trump to Request Release During Meeting with China's Leader

Sylvia Zin, wife of US academic U Min Zin who was arrested in China on charges of espionage and endangering national security, has requested that President Donald Trump ensure her husband's release during his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Hearing Held in Congress
Sylvia Zin, wife of think tank executive U Min Zin who is imprisoned in China, addressed lawmakers at a hearing organized by the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
Zin stated her belief that President Trump would raise her husband's case at next week's summit.
The Academic's Arrest Process
U Min Zin, director of ISP-Myanmar, a Myanmar-focused think tank, was detained on June 3 in the city of Kunming, where he had gone for an academic conference.
Committee Chair Young Kim stated that Beijing carried out this arrest to send a message to individuals whose research makes them uncomfortable.
Other Detention Cases and Demands
Sylvia Zin expressed her hope that seismologist Chen Youlin, who has been imprisoned in China for two years, and other wrongfully detained American citizens would also be released.
Additionally, the son of Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai joined Congress to call for his father's release.
White House and State Department Statements
A senior White House official stated that resolving the wrongful detentions of US citizens is always a priority for the president.
The US State Department announced last month that U Min Zin and Chen Youlin were wrongfully detained in China.
