Workers Rescued from Dam Tunnel in Nepal Flood Disaster
More than a week after the devastating floods in Nepal, two workers trapped in a hydroelectric tunnel were pulled out alive.
Amid ongoing search and rescue operations following the disasters that hit the Nepal-China border, an encouraging development occurred. Two workers trapped in the tunnel of the Trishuli 3A hydroelectric power plant were rescued alive more than a week after the incident.
Signs of Life Found in the Tunnel
As part of the search and rescue operations carried out in the disaster zone in Nepal, teams noticed sounds coming from inside the dam tunnel.
Difficult and Dangerous Rescue Operation
Rescue workers reached the survivors by clearing massive boulders blocking the path with explosives and then excavating by hand.
A disaster response expert described this operation as a dangerous and unprecedented attempt to locate buried tunnel entrances.
Loss of Life and Missing Persons in the Region
While the death toll from the disaster across Nepal exceeded 1,290, it was reported that 21 people lost their lives on the Chinese side.
Thousands of people remain missing in both countries, including more than 900 workers who were employed in numerous energy projects in Nepal.
Technology and Heavy Machinery Used
Satellite data, engineering blueprints, and heavy machinery to clear mud and debris were utilized in the successful rescue operation.
