AI company Anthropic issues risk warning ahead of IPO
Anthropic, the developer of the Claude chatbot, has highlighted the potential existential risks that artificial intelligence technology could pose for humanity in its filing ahead of its initial public offering on the Nasdaq stock exchange.
AI startup Anthropic, in a regulatory filing published ahead of its planned initial public offering on the Nasdaq stock exchange, warned that its technology could pose "catastrophic or existential risks" to humanity if appropriate safeguards are not implemented.
Founded five years ago by siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, Anthropic holds the distinction of being the first entirely AI-focused company to go public. The company stated that advanced artificial intelligence systems could create severe dangers if misused, weaponized, or allowed to operate with a high degree of autonomy. This warning was added to the filing in line with concerns raised by policymakers, regulators, and internal experts.
No share count, price range, or precise date has yet been announced regarding the company's IPO. According to financial data, Anthropic generated $16.3 billion in revenue during the first half of the year while reporting a loss of over $80.7 billion. The company's market valuation is expected to surpass SpaceX, which went public in the summer with a valuation of approximately $1.8 trillion.
