Using artificial intelligence to step up the fight against doping

The use of artificial intelligence in the fight against doping was one of the main agenda items at the 3rd Central and Eastern Europe Anti-Doping Summit held in Santorini, with the participation of World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) officials and representatives from 26 countries.

New technologies capable of supporting data analysis, test planning, and investigation processes were discussed at the event. It was stated that such tools can process large amounts of data and provide contributions to relevant organizations. Sébastien Gillot, Director of the WADA European Office, noted that artificial intelligence is powerful in understanding trends and identifying patterns, but it can also be used by those who violate the rules.

Dora Hegyi, Vice Chair of the WADA Athlete Council, evaluated how artificial intelligence helps athletes stay informed and organizations operate effectively. Lawyer Penny Konitsioti addressed the legal dimensions, noting that an athlete's artificial intelligence searches, if not properly declared, could be used against them in legal proceedings. Participants agreed that technological developments must be supported by certain safeguards such as human oversight, transparency, and the protection of personal data.
