‘There is no inevitable dystopia’: Jeanette Winterson on AI and the future of humanity

Author Jeanette Winterson shared her works addressing how artificial intelligence could change our lives and her thoughts on the future.

In her 2021 book "12 Bytes," in which she examines how artificial intelligence might transform our lives, author Jeanette Winterson states that everything we do is a fiction and that dreams like flying and space travel have become reality. Having long reflected on potential future scenarios, the author had imagined a world filled with robots and immortal humans in her 2007 novel "The Stone Gods." Before "12 Bytes," she penned "Frankisstein: A Love Story," which blended the summer when Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein with AI-enabled robots and the journey of a trans doctor.

Speaking upon her return from a visit to China, Winterson noted that her debut novel, "Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit," in which she recounted her childhood in a fictionalized language, has sold over a million copies in the last six years. Believing that in an era of long working hours and uncertainties brought by artificial intelligence, this book grants readers permission to imagine a different future, the author mentioned that she wants to pitch a podcast project titled "The Rest is Human" to the Goalhanger production company.
