Artificial Intelligence Ban and Screen Time Limits in New York City Schools
The New York City education system is preparing to ban student-focused artificial intelligence tools and limit screen times.
Under the new policy to be implemented in New York City schools, student-focused artificial intelligence tools will be banned from kindergarten through eighth grade, while individual device screen times will be limited for certain age groups.
Artificial Intelligence and Screen Time Rules
The new policy, prepared based on Department of Education documents and sources, is expected to be announced on Wednesday. In the nation's largest school system, the youngest students will be blocked from accessing generative artificial intelligence tools such as chatbots and AI tutors.
Regulations by Grade Level
Under the new rules, schools are prohibited from providing individual devices to students from kindergarten through second grade. A daily individual device screen time of 30 minutes is recommended for third through fifth graders, and 45 minutes for middle school students.
Exceptions for Teachers and High School Students
High school students will have limited access to artificial intelligence for literacy, career preparation, and under five pilot programs. Teachers, on the other hand, will be able to use approved artificial intelligence tools for instructional tasks such as lesson planning.
Limitations and Exceptional Circumstances
Teachers will not be allowed to use artificial intelligence tools for grading, behavioral monitoring, counseling, or developing special education plans. Regular computer-based assessments in reading and mathematics, as well as students with disabilities, will be among the exceptions to this policy.
