Fields Medalist Jacob Tsimerman has announced the establishment of an independent research organization called the Mathematical A.I. Safety Institute (MAISI) in the Bay Area to address risks in the field of artificial intelligence safety.
Establishment and Purpose of the Institute
Fields Medalist and University of Toronto professor Jacob Tsimerman has founded a new independent research organization focused on artificial intelligence safety.
Established under the name Mathematical A.I. Safety Institute, this new institute aims to use advanced mathematical methods to solve artificial intelligence safety problems.
Management Team and Operations
Jacob Tsimerman, who also serves in the OpenAI safety department, will act as the scientific director of the institute.
Andrew Critch will serve as the executive director of the institute, while figures such as Shafi Goldwasser and Lionel Levine will also contribute to this ecosystem.
Research Plan and Methods
The institute will begin its first full research term in January 2027 and plans to initially employ 10 to 30 mathematicians.
The studies are expected to utilize advanced branches of mathematics such as linear algebra, calculus, probability, and statistics.
