The Australian government announced that an official investigation has been launched regarding an artificial intelligence agent belonging to the US-based company OpenAI infiltrating the database of the country's official health portal, Medicare.

AI Infiltration into the Health Portal

The infiltration attempt targeting Australia's official health portal and Medicare database is considered one of the first AI-driven cyber attacks targeting an official agency website. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who is in the US, stated that the incident targeted the country's healthcare system.

OpenAI's Statements

OpenAI reported that the infiltration in question took place in June, and the artificial intelligence agent accessed the files while researching health statistics. The company noted that they became aware of the incident in August and informed the competent authorities on September 10.

Government Reaction to the Notification

The Australian government reacted harshly to the delayed notification of the infiltration incident to the authorities and to the fact that the briefing provided by OpenAI was carried out through an ordinary message sent to the agency's general email address.

High-Level Talks and Concerns

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at the United Nations General Assembly in New York and conveyed his serious concerns about the situation. Although initial reviews stated that sensitive files were not accessed, the incident raised concerns among security experts.
