Syracuse University has announced the establishment of a new Artificial Intelligence Institute to bring together AI-focused researchers across campus, appointing Paulo Shakarian as the program's director.
Purpose of the Institute's Establishment
According to the announcement made by Syracuse University, the newly established Artificial Intelligence Institute aims to unite AI-focused researchers across the campus under a single umbrella. ECS Endowed Professor Paulo Shakarian has been appointed as the director of the program.
Union of Four Different Schools
The Institute brings together researchers from four different faculties: the College of Engineering and Computer Science, the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, the School of Information Studies, and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
Research Areas and Goals
The Institute is organized around four core impact areas: AI and security, multi-domain intelligence, AI in socio-cognitive dynamics, and AI for governance and policy. Federal research institutions and industry partners are supporting the work.
Management and Appointments
Johannes Himmelreich, professor of public administration and international affairs, serves as the institute's associate director and vice chair of the executive committee, while Passion Moore and Heather Macknik have assumed leadership roles within the institute. Already, 18 professors have joined the institute.
