Uber Launches Autonomous Vehicle Era on London Streets in Partnership with Wayve
Fifteen autonomous vehicles have hit the road in London in partnership with British AI company Wayve. Due to regulations, a safety supervisor is present in the driver's seat.
Uber has deployed 15 autonomous Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles onto the streets of London in partnership with British artificial intelligence company Wayve. Due to current regulatory constraints, human supervisors are stationed in the driver's seats.
Autonomous Vehicles on London Streets
Uber has launched one of its largest real-world tests to date in London, a city known for its complex road layouts and countless roundabouts. As part of this initiative, 15 AI-powered autonomous vehicles have entered city traffic.
Regulatory Frameworks and the Supervisor Requirement
Because regulatory bodies in London do not yet permit fully driverless operation, a safety supervisor must be present inside each vehicle. While these vehicles can travel anywhere within the city, they are not yet permitted to make airport trips.
Wayve and Artificial Intelligence Technology
Unlike its competitors, British technology company Wayve's artificial intelligence system is trained on millions of hours of global driving data rather than pre-mapping the city. The company's investors include Nvidia and Microsoft, alongside Uber.
Impact on the Taxi Industry
The number of London's famous black cab drivers has dropped from approximately 25,000 in 2010 to around 16,000 today. Sarfraz Maredia, Uber's global head of autonomous mobility and delivery, stated that they do not view robotaxis as a near-term risk due to the growing market.
