Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump met at a summit in Washington to address several critical issues.
Washington Summit and Meeting Topics
Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump met in Washington on Thursday.
This summit took place in the shadow of major unresolved disputes such as Taiwan, military communication, artificial intelligence, rare earth elements, and Iran.
First Steps on Artificial Intelligence Risks
Dr. Yun Sun, Director of the China Program at the Stimson Center, stated that the US and China are still at an early stage regarding risks and competition related to artificial intelligence.
While it was stated that Trump set superintelligence as the focal point of the visit, top executives of technology companies were expected to attend the official dinner to be held on Thursday evening.
Taiwan and Iran Agenda
Dr. Yun Sun argued that the summit would not necessarily reduce the risk of Beijing capitalizing on shifts in perception regarding Taiwan, and that if Taiwan doubted US resolve, China might view this as an opportunity.
During the talks where the Iran issue was also addressed, it was stated that Washington requested China to reduce imports of Iranian crude oil, which serves as a financial lifeline for Tehran.
Cultural and Youth Exchanges
Chinese leader Xi Jinping issued an official invitation for 100,000 young Americans to visit China over the next five years for exchange programs and educational purposes.
This move is considered part of China's long-term people-to-people diplomacy strategy.
