According to TurkStat data, the number of museums across Turkey increased in 2025, reaching a total of 664, and the number of visitors also saw a significant rise.

According to the 2025 Cultural Heritage Statistics results shared by the Turkish Statistical Institute, the total number of museums nationwide rose to 664.

Annual Increase in the Number of Museums

According to the 2025 Cultural Heritage Statistics results announced by the Turkish Statistical Institute, the number of museums across the country recorded a 4.4 percent increase compared to the previous year. With this increase, the total number of museums reached 664.

Distribution and Categories of Museums

Of the 664 total museums operating across the country, 220 were under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, while 426 operated in the private museum category. Additionally, the number of museums operating under the National Palaces Directorate was recorded as 18. Meanwhile, the total number of archaeological sites (ören yeri) nationwide was announced as 148.

Artifact and Visitor Statistics

The total number of artifacts housed in museums increased by 0.4 percent last year compared to the previous year, reaching 4 million 12 thousand 294. The total number of visitors to museums and archaeological sites increased by 6.8 percent last year compared to the previous year, rising to 65 million 862 thousand 639 people.

Protected Area Data and Ratios

The total number of protected areas (sit alanı) increased by 6 percent in 2025 compared to the previous year, reaching the figure of 27 thousand 703. The vast majority of these recorded protected areas, namely 97.1 percent, consisted of archaeological zones.
