The minutes of the European Central Bank officials' meeting held in July have been published. The minutes detailed discussions on the status of policy interest rates and potential additional steps within the framework of inflation uncertainty and economic growth.

July Meeting Minutes

According to the published meeting summaries, some officials supported last month's hike, stating that the probability of not needing an additional rate increase was low. On the other hand, it was emphasized that all members were prepared to keep interest rates steady amid the high uncertainty stemming from the persistence of inflation.

Inflation and Growth Expectations

It is notable that inflation in the Eurozone remains above target, hovering around 3 percent, and economic growth exceeds expectations. Following the initial move in June, there is a widespread expectation in the market that borrowing costs could be increased again.

Disagreements in the Governing Council

Hawkish Isabel Schnabel argued that interest rates need to be raised, maintaining that prolonged conflicts in the Middle East and strong growth increase inflation risks. From the dovish wing, Piero Cipollone warned that excessive tightening could harm the economy.

Deposit Rate and Neutral Range

The core question for policymakers is whether the deposit rate at 2.25 percent will be raised to levels that will brake economic activity. Meanwhile, Chief Economist Philip Lane stated that the 2.5 percent rate is the upper bound of the neutral range.
