Number of Runways at Istanbul Airport is Increasing

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the 4th main runway, which is Istanbul Airport's first East-West oriented runway, will be put into service on September 18.

Stating that service is currently provided with a total of 5 runways, consisting of 3 main and 2 backup runways extending in the north-south direction, Uraloğlu reported that this number will increase to 6 with the commissioning of the new runway.

Technical Specifications and Dimensions of the New Runway

It was noted that the new concrete runway, built on the East-West axis, is 2,820 meters long and 45 meters wide.

It was stated that the new runway will contribute to more effective execution of operations under different weather conditions.

Savings in Flight Times and Fuel

It was stated that the new runway will shorten taxi times and airborne times, especially for domestic flights and East-bound routes.

In this way, it is aimed to achieve significant savings in both fuel and time.

Increase in Operational Capacity and Safety

It was emphasized that the new East-West oriented runway will contribute to safe operations under crosswind conditions and will strengthen the goal of quadruple runway operations.

With its location close to hangar areas, general aviation operations will be allowed to be carried out faster and more independently.
