Manipulation Operation in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Sector
While Tax Inspection Board audits identified companies engaging in price and document manipulation, proceedings were initiated against numerous suspects across 22 provinces.
During the Tax Inspection Board's investigations into the fresh fruit and vegetable sector, it was determined that high-risk companies manipulated prices and tonages in documents. Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek announced that simultaneous searches were launched in 22 provinces and detention warrants were issued for suspect managers.
Global and Local Price Divergence
While global food commodity prices showed a limited increase on an annual basis, price increase rates in food and non-alcoholic beverages in Turkey reached much higher levels.
The increase in agricultural producer prices and developments in the price chain from farm to table caused widespread public resonance and led to increased audits.
Manipulations Identified During Audits
Examinations conducted by the Tax Inspection Board revealed with concrete findings that numerous companies deemed risky inflated purchase prices in their records.
It was determined that low purchase prices declared by producers were reflected in official records with much higher costs and that tonnage games were played.
Example Embezzlements and Irregularities
As a result of the investigations, it was determined that certain companies declared costs far above real purchase prices in staple products such as tangerines and potatoes.
Additionally, the preparation of numerous fake documents in the names of deceased individuals was among the detected irregularities.
Simultaneous Operation in 22 Provinces
Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek announced that the button has been pushed for an operation targeting major distributors that generate unfair profits by manipulating market prices.
In simultaneous raids carried out across a total of 22 provinces, workplaces and residences were searched, and detention warrants were implemented for numerous managers.
