Sweetener Regulation on Fruit Juices from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry
According to the new communiqué draft, the use of sweeteners in fruit juices in concentrated, puree, and powder forms is completely banned.
A new fruit juice communiqué draft prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has been opened for industry feedback. With the draft regulation, the use of sweeteners in fruit juices in concentrated, puree, and powder forms is banned, while new rules are introduced within the scope of European Union harmonization processes.
Scope of the Sweetener Ban
The new communiqué draft prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry introduces significant restrictions on additives used in fruit juice production. According to the text presented for evaluation by industry representatives, the use of sweetener is prohibited in all fruit juices marketed in concentrated, puree, or powder forms.
New Rules for Fruit Nectars
According to the special regulation prepared for fruit nectars, the complete use of sweeteners instead of sugar is permitted in products that do not contain added sugar. In fruit nectars classified as low-energy, sweeteners may be partially added instead of sugar.
Products with Reduced Natural Sugar
In line with steps towards harmonization with the European Union, the production of fruit juices whose natural sugar content has been reduced through special processes will also be allowed. Beverages whose natural sugar amount has been reduced by at least 30 percent while preserving their existing characteristics are being included in the legislation as an official definition.
Justification for Legislative Change
Achieving full compliance with European Union legislation and correcting legislative references stand out as the main justification for the changes in the articles of the communiqué. The draft text also comprehensively determines the application details regarding labeling rules.
