The US Mint has released a new one-dollar coin featuring a portrait of Donald Trump to celebrate the country's 250th anniversary. With this development, Trump has become the first living president to appear on US currency in the past century.
Introduction of the Commemorative Coin
The special one-dollar commemorative coin released by the US Mint on Wednesday features a portrait of Donald Trump on the obverse side. The coin also bears the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST.
In official statements, it was emphasized that this special commemorative series symbolizes the national spirit, pride, and heritage of the US at its upcoming milestone.
Sales Process and High Demand
The coins in question were offered for sale at $61 for 25-coin roll packages and $154.50 for 100-coin bags. Just hours after going on sale, supplies were reported to be sold out on the mint's website.
These gold-colored coins do not contain real gold. According to mint data, the coins are made of 88.5 percent copper mixed with zinc, manganese, and nickel.
Legal Debates and Historical Precedents
Federal law generally prohibits living individuals from appearing on US currency. However, the Trump administration argues that the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 covers the reverse side and does not explicitly prohibit the obverse side.
Similar examples have occurred in the past; a half-dollar coin issued in 1926 to commemorate the country's 150th anniversary featured the portrait of then-serving President Calvin Coolidge.
