New Vessel Order Plan

Norway-based chemical tanker shipowner Utkilen has started discussions with shipyards for new vessel orders ranging between 13,000 and 14,000 dwt to renew and expand its fleet. The Bergen-based company is maintaining its contacts with shipyards in Turkey, China, India, and Japan.

High-Technology Equipment

It is stated that the planned new vessels will feature lowerable sails to pass beneath infrastructure facilities near ports and large battery packs to provide partial power during navigation.

Advantage of Turkish Shipyards

Utkilen Chief Financial Officer Espen Bjelland pointed out the high costs of shipbuilding, while noting that Turkish shipyards allow for a greater use of European-origin equipment compared to Chinese shipyards.

Difficulty in Selling Older Vessels

The company plans to phase out its older vessels built in 1996 from the fleet along with the new deliveries and planned newbuilds. However, the sale of the older vessels is becoming difficult due to sanctions against Russia and obstacles in Know Your Customer processes.
