In the general elections held in Bosnia under the shadow of ethnic tensions, economic pressures, and hopes for European Union integration, Serb nationalist politician Milorad Dodik declared victory for his party.

Critical Election Process in Bosnia

Approximately 3.4 million voters in Bosnia headed to the polls to determine the three-member multi-ethnic presidency, members of the national parliament, and the institutional heads of the two entities. The elections were conducted under the influence of economic pressures, the prospect of the country's accession to the European Union, and lingering ethnic tensions from the past war.

In Sunday's elections, electronic voter identification and ballot scanners were used for the first time in order to prevent irregularities and organized voter manipulation.

Milorad Dodik's Role and Statements

Although not on the ballot, Milorad Dodik, who dominated the campaign and is known for his separatist rhetoric, stated that his party would hold a large majority in the Serb-majority region of Republika Srpska. Emphasizing that international support was influential in the electoral success, Dodik stated that they would not abandon their political stance.

Dodik, who was convicted last year for defying the decisions of the peace agreement supervisor and banned from public office, previously served as the president of Republika Srpska.

Presidential Race and Vote Shares

With approximately 90 percent of the votes counted, Dodik's ally Zeljka Cvijanovic secured more than 55 percent of the vote for the Serb seat in the tripartite presidency, placing her well ahead of her closest rival. Darijana Filipovic emerged as the leading figure for the Croat seat, while Bosniak member Denis Becirovic maintained his lead ahead of his closest competitor.

Turnout and Election Results

The Central Election Commission announced that a total of 1,432,269 votes were cast, with a voter turnout rate of 42 percent. This rate represented a decrease of approximately 8 percent compared to the last election held in 2022.
