Child Born with Reversed Organs and Heart Vessels Regains Health After Successful Surgery

Syrian national Ömer El Zamil, who was born with his internal organs and main heart vessels reversed in a mirror image, regained his health following a successful six-hour surgical operation performed at Ankara Bilkent City Hospital.

Born with Reversed Organs

Ömer El Zamil, one of the three children of the couple Abdurrahman and Şeyma El Zamil, was born with the two crucial main vessel connections of the blood flow inside his heart and his internal body organs reversed in a mirror image.

Referred to Ankara

Kept under observation since birth due to his heart being located close to the right side, Ömer El Zamil was referred to Ankara Bilkent City Hospital in December of last year.

Detailed Examinations Were Conducted

Examinations performed on Ömer revealed that his heart was located on the right side of his body, his carotid artery and pulmonary artery emerged in reverse, and there was a large hole between the ventricles of his heart.

Six-Hour Operation

Ömer El Zamil regained his health through a critical surgery performed at the hospital that lasted six hours and went through a successful surgical process.

Three-Dimensional Planning Was Done

Prof. Dr. Atakan Atalay, the Administrative and Educational Officer of the Bilkent City Hospital Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery Clinic who performed the operation, stated that the surgery was planned using three-dimensional imaging.

Vessels and Hole Corrected

The two main vessels emerging from the heart were completely separated to eliminate constrictions, were reversed inside the heart and re-sutured together with the coronary vessels, and the hole in the heart was closed.
