Folate Deficiency and Its Importance During Pregnancy
Experts state that vitamin B9, which the body cannot produce on its own, must be obtained through a regular diet to prevent anemia and fatigue, and to ensure pregnancy health.
Nutritional and Diet Specialist Ayça Sena Yılmaz from Medicana Ataköy Hospital drew attention to the health problems that folate deficiency can cause in the body and its critical role during pregnancy.
The Role of Folate in the Body
Specialist Dietitian Ayça Sena Yılmaz stated that folate, or vitamin B9, plays an important role in the body's DNA production, repair, and cell division. Because the body cannot produce this vitamin itself, it must be taken from external sources through nutrients.
Symptoms of Deficiency
Noting that inadequate folate can lead to anemia, experts stated that the condition can cause megaloblastic anemia. In addition, symptoms such as prolonged fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, headaches, and brain fog may also be observed.
Pregnancy and Sperm Quality
Getting an adequate amount of folic acid during pregnancy is of great importance to prevent neural tube defects. Furthermore, it is stated that folate also has an effect on sperm quality in men.
Nutrition and Supplement Recommendations
It is recommended to add folate-rich foods such as spinach, broccoli, legumes, and citrus fruits to the daily shopping list. Experts noted that supplement products should not be used uncontrollably and must be taken upon a specialist's recommendation.
