It was determined that a foreign object suspected to be a mass in the lung of a 63-year-old patient who went to the hospital with complaints of inability to breathe and coughing in Afyonkarahisar was actually garlic that had slipped in six months prior.

Hospital Admission and Examinations

63-year-old Recep Arslan, living in the Çobanlar district of Afyonkarahisar, was taken to Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University Hospital after his complaints of coughing, inability to swallow, and inability to breathe increased.

Initial examinations revealed a mass in the patient's lung, and a bronchoscopy procedure was decided upon to clarify the condition.

Surprising Discovery During the Operation

During the bronchoscopy procedure, it was understood that the cause of the complaints was not a mass, but a piece of garlic that had escaped from the trachea into the lung.

This foreign body was successfully removed from where it was lodged through a successful operation performed by Chest Diseases Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aydın Balcı and his team.

Statements from the Specialist Physician

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aydın Balcı stated that the patient had been experiencing chest pain and coughing fits severe enough to prevent sleep at night for about six months.

Balcı noted that they began the procedure with the suspicion of a mass but saw that the moving object was garlic, and that the patient began to breathe comfortably following this intervention.

The Patient's Experience

Recep Arslan stated that he had been swallowing garlic raw for two years in order to find healing.

He expressed that after difficult days, he regained his health and felt relieved with the removal of the garlic from his lung through the operation.
