New Food Codex Regulation Published in the Official Gazette
With the new food codex regulation by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the use of pork- and insect-derived flavorings in food products has been banned.
The Turkish Food Codex Regulation on Flavorings and Food Ingredients with Flavoring Properties, prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, has been published in the Official Gazette and entered into force. With the new regulation, the use of pork- and insect-derived flavorings in food products is banned, while labeling rules and a gradual schedule for certain substances have been introduced.
Regulation Enters into Force in the Official Gazette
The new Turkish Food Codex Regulation on Flavorings and Food Ingredients with Flavoring Properties, prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, has been published in the Official Gazette and entered into force, repealing the former regulation dated 2011.
Ban on Pork- and Insect-Derived Substances
With the new regulation, the use of pork- and insect-derived flavorings in food products will not be permitted. The ban covers not only flavorings but also food ingredients with flavoring properties and similar materials used in their production.
Gradual Schedule for Ten Special Substances
A gradual banning schedule has been established for 10 specific flavoring substances defined in the regulation. The import and production of substances coded FL 04.029, FL 05.100, FL 05.175, FL 05.222, FL 15.029, FL 15.030, FL 15.060, FL 15.119, FL 15.130, and FL 15.131 will be halted.
Criteria for the Term 'Natural' on Labels
A new condition has been introduced for using the term 'natural' on the labels of flavorings. Accordingly, it has been made mandatory that the components used are derived from the specified source at a rate of at least 95 percent by weight.
Transition Period Granted to Businesses
A transition period has been granted until December 31, 2026, for food businesses to comply with the new rules. Products manufactured before this date will be able to be sold until the end of their shelf lives.
