Obezite cerrahisinde kritik uyarı: Ameliyatla tedavi bitmiyor

Assist. Prof. Dr. Uygar Düzci, an Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Specialist at Medipol University Esenler Hospital, shared the details of obesity surgery and critical points to be considered after the operation.

The Effects of Obesity on Health

Obesity stands out as a significant disease that is not merely excess weight, but can also bring along many serious health problems. Experts state that this condition can be linked to risks associated with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, musculoskeletal system problems, and certain types of cancer.

Criteria for Surgery

Surgical methods are evaluated for individuals who cannot achieve permanent weight loss through methods such as diet and exercise. The surgical option comes to the agenda in cases where the body mass index is above 40, or above 35 with accompanying additional diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, or hypertension.

The Surgical Process and After

It is stated that the decision for surgery is made jointly by multiple specialists. It is known that the operation takes an average of 1 hour and patients are safely discharged after staying in the hospital for 1 to 2 nights.

Continuation of Treatment and Nutrition

It is emphasized that the treatment process does not end after the operation, and patients transition from a liquid- and puree-heavy diet to a normal routine under the control of a dietitian. It is essential to make healthy eating habits permanent in order to prevent regaining weight.
