Tobacco Use in Turkey: Increase Among Women, Decrease Among Men
According to Ministry of Health and TurkStat data, the total tobacco use rate rose to 33.2% in the 2008-2025 period, with an increase observed among women and a decrease among men.

Tobacco Use Rates by Years
According to information compiled from Ministry of Health and Turkish Statistical Institute data, the tobacco use rate in Turkey rose from 31.2% in 2008 to 33.2% in 2025.
Change Table by Gender
Over the 17-year period, the rate of tobacco product use among individuals aged 15 and over increased from 15.2% to 20.6% for women. During the same period, this rate dropped from 47.9% to 46% among men.
Loss of Life Caused by Tobacco
Approximately 125,000 people lose their lives due to tobacco every year in the country. Of these deaths, 25,000 are caused by second-hand smoke.
Relationship Among Causes of Death
A large portion, namely 67.3% of total deaths, stem from circulatory system diseases, tumors, and respiratory system diseases that are directly related to cigarettes.
Increase in Cigarette Sales Volume
Cigarette sales, which stood at 91,000 tons in 2012, amounted to 4.5 billion packs. These figures reached approximately 160,000 tons and 8 billion packs by 2025.
New Legal Regulation Plan
A lifelong ban on cigarette sales is planned for those born after January 2015. Accordingly, it was announced that a legislative proposal has been prepared to be submitted to Parliament.
