Turkish scientists conduct cancer research with black carrot and turnip juice
It has been determined that components of black carrot and bacteria isolated from turnip juice significantly suppress the proliferation of various cancer cells.
Turkish scientists at Erciyes University have identified that components within black carrot and turnip juice, as well as lactic acid bacteria, have suppressive and reducing effects on the proliferation of colon, liver, small intestine, and large intestine cancer cells.
Background and Scope of the Study
In research conducted at Erciyes University, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Food Engineering, the health effects of plant-based components were examined in detail.
Effect of Black Carrot on Colon and Liver
In studies carried out under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mahmut Doğan, Dr. Duygu Aslan Türker's doctoral dissertation determined that anthocyanins in black carrot have a cell proliferation-suppressing effect on colon and liver cancer cell lines.
The Role of Turnip Juice and Bacteria
In the continuation of the research, led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Yetiman, new investigations were conducted on turnip juice using black carrot.
Over 90 Percent Reduction in Bowel Cancer Cells
In cell culture studies conducted in cooperation with Hacettepe University and Kırşehir Ahi Evran University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Immunology, it was observed that the bacteria extracted from turnip reduced small and large intestine cancer cells by 90-95 percent.
Future Goals and Expectations
Stating that they aim to produce value-added compounds from fruit and vegetable waste, Prof. Dr. Mahmut Doğan expressed that faculties of medicine and pharmacy could benefit from these outputs.
