University Students React to Accommodation and Livelihood Hardships in Dormitories
As the new academic year approaches, economic difficulties, rising costs, and inadequate nutrition conditions in higher education dormitories have come to the fore.
A student from the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences at Erciyes University shared observations regarding the livelihood hardships, price hikes, and poor nutrition conditions experienced in dormitories ahead of the new academic year.
Dormitory Price Hikes and Livelihood Hardships
Stating that price hikes were applied to dormitory fees even before the official increases were announced, students stated that the entire amount of the scholarship deposited into their accounts went toward dormitory and deposit fees.
Stating that the remaining money is far from meeting basic needs, the students expressed that they are experiencing a serious economic impasse.
Unhealthy Nutrition and Health Issues
Stating that the food in the dormitory is prepared with cheap oils and negatively affects women's health, students drew attention to the health problems they experience.
They conveyed that dormitory menus mostly consist of carbohydrate-heavy foods, and that healthy nutrition has become impossible under these conditions.
Obligation to Work During the Summer Period
It was emphasized that students are forced to work during summer vacations due to economic difficulties.
It was stated that this situation negatively affects students' personal development and social life.
