Investigations and the insurance process continue regarding the accident of the high-speed sea bus named Filo Jet, belonging to Filo Maritime, which took on water and sank while operating between Kyrenia and Mersin Taşucu.

History of the Vessel

Filo Jet was brought to Turkey from France for voyages to Egypt, but it remained docked for two years due to financial problems and enforcement lawsuits. Two years ago, it was purchased by Filo Maritime and underwent comprehensive maintenance at the İskenderun Mediterranean Shipyard.

Causes of the Accident

Experts state that the accident was caused by improper operation and insufficient personnel. These high-speed vessels, made of composite material rather than steel construction, should not be operated in waves higher than three meters.

Impact of the Storm

According to information obtained by experts, a few days before the accident, the ship attempted to navigate in a strong storm and 30-knot winds. It was determined that cracks formed in the hull of the ship due to the 4-4.5 meter waves that arose during this time.

Role of the Captain and Crew

Water that filled into the lower void due to the cracks in the hull made its way into the passenger cabin. As a result of the captain executing a hard starboard-helm maneuver, the water accumulated on one side, causing the vessel to capsize and sink.

Insurance and Compensation Process

The ship has passenger liability insurance and hull insurance. Insurers have appointed surveyors, lawyers, and expert witnesses, and it is estimated that the total amount to be paid from passenger liability insurance will reach 10 million dollars.
