Tekin emphasized that this incident should not be characterized as a school attack and should not be interpreted solely through the concept of school security.
Families' Responsibility Regarding Firearms and Children
Reminding that the perpetrator took the hunting rifle belonging to his grandfather, Minister Tekin pointed out that it is of critical importance for families keeping licensed firearms in their homes to store these weapons in places inaccessible to children.
He stated that while initial statements mentioned peer bullying, the child had only two or three days of absenteeism, and therefore it was not possible to speak of a situation involving peer bullying.
Social Media Inspection and the Role of Parents
Emphasizing that social media inspection by families is of vital importance, Minister Tekin noted that parents must definitely track their children's correspondence and relationships on social media until they reach adulthood.
Physical Security Measures Taken in Schools
Touching upon the security measures taken in schools, Tekin stated that they categorized schools according to their physical conditions.
He explained that they initiated a series of standard measures such as indoor and perimeter cameras, turnstiles, facial recognition systems, hand detectors, and emergency buttons.
Ongoing Practices and PISA Results
He stated that practices such as the school appointment system, mobile phone restriction, school uniforms, teacher aprons, and school bus tracking systems are being continued decisively.
Touching also upon the PISA 2025 results, Minister Tekin noted that there are areas where Turkey increased its scores among OECD member countries, and that being the only country to increase its scores by nearly 20 points in areas measured by PISA is significant.
