Following the Turkey-Italy match held in Bursa, the inadequate pitch and turf quality, despite the fascinating architecture of modern stadiums, resonated widely in the sports community and prompted the questioning of maintenance policies.

Pitch Debates in the Match in Bursa

In the Turkey-Italy match played in Bursa, the pitch stood out alongside the football itself. The turf, which became heavy after heavy rainfall, created a contradiction with the image of the 43,000-capacity modern stadium.

The match, which Turkey lost 4-1, reopened the pitch problems that have remained unresolved for years to discussion.

Investments and Stadium Capacities

According to the information shared by Minister of Youth and Sports Osman Aşkın Bak, 41 new stadiums have entered service across Turkey since 2002. Large stands and modern structures have been built in many cities from Istanbul to Trabzon, from Konya to Bursa.

While Fenerbahçe's expansion project to increase its stadium capacity to 64,000 is also being discussed by the public, it is wondered how field quality will be maintained as the stands grow.

The Impact of Architectural Structures on Grass

The modern architecture of stadiums can sometimes negatively affect the development of turf. As stated in FIFA guidelines, high stands and wide roofs can block sunlight, while enclosed stadiums restrict air circulation.

Turf needs sunlight, oxygen, and appropriate temperatures to stay healthy; therefore, these elements must be taken into account in new projects.

Hybrid Turf and Maintenance Processes

Although investments in hybrid turf technology have been made in Turkey recently, this system alone does not offer a sufficient solution. The failure of natural grass roots to develop, inadequate ventilation, and drainage problems can ruin pitches.

It is emphasized that the same maintenance program cannot be applied under different climatic conditions, and the important thing is not just for the grass to look green on match day, but to remain healthy throughout the season.

European Standards and Inspections

While special grow lights and fans are used for turf maintenance in major stadiums in Europe, the Turkish Football Federation has also initiated inspections by appointing turf field officers for the top two leagues.

However, the recent scene in Bursa shows that current efforts and operating expenses need to be reviewed.
