To commemorate the civilians who lost their lives in Gaza, Irish players will take to the pitch wearing black armbands and will not participate in protocol ceremonies prior to the match.
Ceremony and Handshake Boycott
According to the official statement, protocol practices such as handshakes and pennant exchanges during the ceremony of the match to be played against Israel have been completely cancelled.
Republic of Ireland national team players will strictly not take part in these ceremonies to draw attention to civilian deaths in Gaza.
Internal Team Voting Process
It was stated that difficult and lengthy discussions took place in the Irish camp before the match, and the issue was handled in detail within the team.
David Courell stated that following internal evaluations lasting four hours in the camp, a vote was held and the decision to take the field was made by a majority vote.
