The strengthening of El Nino, triggered by temperature increases in the Tropical Pacific Ocean, is preparing to directly affect weather patterns across Turkey and Europe in the upcoming autumn and winter months.

Effects of the El Nino Phenomenon on Climate

El Nino, which emerges when sea surface temperatures in the Tropical Pacific Ocean rise above the long-term average, stands out as a large-scale climate event. It is projected that the El Nino in the 2026-27 period may cross the threshold and surpass past strong events.

Current Weather Conditions Across Turkey

Although mid-September has been reached across Turkey, air temperatures continue to remain high. While thermometers show high figures in some regions, temperatures reached 43 degrees in Adana, for example.

Autumn and October Evaluations from Experts

Dr. Güven Özdemir, a Meteorology Specialist from Istanbul Aydın University, made evaluations based on data from Copernicus and the General Directorate of Meteorology. He stated that instead of a classic cool autumn, a warm, humid, and occasionally very rainy, volatile autumn pattern might be observed in Turkey.

Weekly Weather Expectations for Istanbul

In Istanbul, temperatures are expected to remain above normals during the first days of the week of September 14-20. In the second half of the week, atmospheric activity is projected to increase, raising the likelihood of cooling and localized precipitation.

Winter Season Projections for Europe and Turkey

According to the winter season forecasts of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, snowfall may remain below normal across Europe and in the western and low-lying parts of Turkey during November and December. Air currents coming from the western and southwestern directions are expected to carry mild air to the continent.

High Altitudes and Snowfall Probabilities

Experts emphasize that the snow potential will remain strong in high-altitude areas such as Eastern Anatolia. In regions like Marmara and Istanbul, while snowfall is not expected to spread across the entire season, it is noted that short-term and strong cold snaps could be effective.
