Prominent tech companies such as Meta and Klarna have withdrawn plans to completely replace employees with artificial intelligence after AI systems failed to deliver projected productivity increases and caused technical problems.

Meta Halts Restructuring Plan

Meta's restructuring plan, which aimed to reduce headcount in certain teams by up to 60 percent and hand over tasks to AI agents, was cancelled after expected efficiency could not be achieved. The company noted that artificial intelligence failed to provide the projected efficiency and technical issues increased.

Sweden-based financial technology company Klarna has turned back to hiring human workers due to disruptions in service quality following its AI-powered customer service system. The company adopted a new model in its cost-reduction-focused process.

According to a 2016 report published by SignalFire, while total hiring at major tech companies declined, the share of software engineering positions increased. On the other hand, sharper declines were observed in areas such as design, marketing, and product management.

Research conducted by the Stanford Digital Economy Lab revealed that entry-level employment remained weak in professions highly exposed to artificial intelligence. Experiences have shown the limits of directly translating AI efficiency into layoffs.
