Following a collision between motorized wooden boats on the Congo River, numerous people are missing, and the bodies of those who lost their lives have been buried.
At least 30 people died and dozens are missing after two motorized wooden boats collided on the Congo River in Congo's Equateur province.
Accident on the River
Two motorized wooden boats collided over the weekend near the Ngombe-Lukolela area in Congo's Equateur province. Authorities reported that search and rescue operations are ongoing following the accident, which occurred on Sunday evening.
Missing Persons and Burials
Provincial Interior Minister Crispin Mputu announced that the 30 people who lost their lives in the accident have already been buried. Teams continue their efforts in the river to find other missing victims and potential survivors.
Travel Routes and Reasons
It was stated that one of the boats involved in the accident was traveling from Ubangi in the northwest to the capital Kinshasa, while the other was heading from Kinshasa toward Lukolela. Authorities emphasized that nighttime travel has led to numerous accidents in the past.
Overloading and Safety Issues
A security guard acting as an eyewitness stated that the boat returning from Ubangi was heavily overloaded with goods. In the Central African nation, nighttime journeys and overcrowded boats frequently cause such fatal accidents.
