Building Collapses Due to Explosion in Central Athens: Five Missing
A violent explosion in the historic district completely destroyed a building, while search and rescue teams are trying to reach five people trapped under the rubble.
An explosion of undetermined cause occurred in a two-story building in a tourist area of Athens. As a result of the explosion, the building completely collapsed, three people were injured, and five people are being sought as missing.
Violent Explosion in Central Athens
A violent explosion occurred in a two-story building located in a central and touristic area of Athens.
Due to the impact of the explosion, twisted metal pieces and concrete debris remained of the building, and surrounding structures were damaged.
Five Missing and Search Operations
Fire department teams reported that five people, including an elderly couple living in the building, are missing and search operations are ongoing.
It was stated that a part of the building was rented out to tourists, and the surrounding hotels and narrow streets have a high pedestrian traffic.
Injured and Surrounding Damage
Three people were injured in the incident, while two women trapped in an adjacent building were rescued, taken to the hospital, and placed under treatment.
Due to the explosion, rocks and glass fragments scattered around reached areas as far as three blocks away.
