Cargo plane crash at Miami Airport: Five people lost their lives
An Amazon cargo plane arriving from Puerto Rico overran the runway at Miami International Airport and struck vehicles, resulting in the deaths of five people.
A Boeing 767 Amazon cargo freighter operated by 21 Air and coming from Puerto Rico overran the runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon, striking vehicles and catching fire. At least five people lost their lives in the crash, and five others were injured.
Plane overruns runway and strikes vehicles
The cargo plane, which took off from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in Puerto Rico, overran the runway during its landing at Miami International Airport and collided with multiple vehicles. Due to the impact, the aircraft burst into flames as dark smoke billowed into the sky.
Officials release statements on fatalities and injuries
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Ray Jadallah stated that the pilot and co-pilot were trapped in the cockpit. Meanwhile, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced during a press conference that five people had lost their lives and five others were injured.
Fire department officials confirmed that a total of ten people were affected by the incident, with three of the injured in critical condition and two transported to the hospital.
Airport operations suspended
This tragic accident caused operations to be suspended at Miami International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the United States. Air and ground traffic at the airport was halted, while approximately 250 flights were delayed.
Official investigation and reviews launched
The National Transportation Safety Board assigned a special team to investigate the crash. Federal Aviation Administration and NTSB teams are continuing their comprehensive investigations into the cause of the accident.
