A recent report published by the World Meteorological Organization revealed that global water resources continue to deplete severely due to degradations in rivers, groundwater, and glaciers, creating vital threats.

Alarming decline in global water resources

In its latest report, the United Nations World Meteorological Organization drew attention to decadal degradation signals in freshwater resources, reporting that abnormal water supply shortages will increase.

According to the disclosed data, 2025 was recorded as one of the driest periods in the last 35 years in terms of global river flows, with 36 percent of basins experiencing below-normal water levels.

Decrease in groundwater and terrestrial storage

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo stated that terrestrial water storage has been on a downward trend since 2014 and that nearly two-thirds of monitored groundwater wells have fallen outside the normal range.

Experts emphasized that groundwater and glaciers act as a critical buffer during dry seasons, but these reserves are currently melting and depleting rapidly.

Regional crises and disruptions in energy production

In August 2026, record-low water levels in the Danube River in Romania led to the shutdown of a nuclear power plant and disruptions in electricity supply.

It was stated that certain regions, such as Central Europe, western Canada, and the United States, have already reached water limits.

Glacial melting and warnings for the future

Glacier monitoring experts reported that future melting is inevitable, but the scale of this decline can be limited by reducing emissions.

The report noted that water scarcity is not solely caused by climate change, as artificial intelligence centers and expanding industries are also putting pressure on water resources.
