Prof. Dr. R. Emre Altekin stated in a message for World Heart Day on September 29 that heart diseases can be largely prevented, drawing attention to the increasing risks at young ages. Meanwhile, new analyses showed that air pollution can also negatively affect eye health.

Prevention and Risk Factors in Heart Diseases

Scientific data show that up to 80 percent of cardiovascular diseases can be prevented by controlling modifiable risk factors. Early diagnosis of problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol is of vital importance.

It is recommended that individuals in the high-risk group undergo regular health check-ups.

Lifestyle and Exercise Recommendations

To protect heart health, tobacco products must be completely quit, and a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and fish should be adopted.

Engaging in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week and avoiding processed foods significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Increase in Early Heart Attacks in Turkey

According to TURKSTAT data, a significant portion of deaths in Turkey in 2024 resulted from cardiovascular diseases.

It was stated that heart attacks are seen at an earlier age in Turkey compared to Europe, and the rate of coronary heart disease under the age of 40 has risen to the 15-20 percent level.

Impact of Air Pollution on Eye Health

Comprehensive analyses have revealed that long-term exposure to polluted air may be associated with certain eye diseases.

It was noted that PM2.5 fine particles in particular may increase the risk of glaucoma and cataracts, and the risk is higher in areas with intense pollution.
