Global Mpox Vaccine Stockpile and Access Initiative
A new global initiative and vaccine stockpile have been launched to ensure fair and timely access to vaccines for countries combating mpox outbreaks.
Launched on August 27, the global initiative aims to provide countries with long-term and equitable access to vaccine resources against mpox outbreaks.
Global Vaccine Stockpile and Launch Date
Preparations have been completed for the global mpox vaccine stockpile established to guarantee timely access to vaccines. The new resource, planned to become operational later this month, will be open to all countries.
The stockpile mechanism in question was approved by the Gavi Vaccine Alliance Board in 2025 and implemented with funding provided by Gavi.
Coordination and Partner Institutions
The new global initiative is coordinated by partners of the International Coordinating Group (ICG) on Vaccine Provision. This partnership structure has broad international representation.
ICG partners include the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Societies, Doctors Without Borders, UNICEF, and the World Health Organization.
Past Mechanisms and Global Outbreaks
This new initiative builds upon the Access and Allocation Mechanism established during the most recent Public Health Emergency of International Concern in 2024.
As mpox continues to cause outbreaks globally, two-thirds of the reported cases are recorded in the African Region.
Case Statistics and Reported Data
Between January 1, 2022, and July 31, 2026, data was streamed from a total of 145 countries and territories worldwide.
During this period, a total of 190,683 confirmed cases were identified, while 529 deaths due to the disease were reported.
