India Welcomes World Leaders to the Capital for the BRICS Summit
With extensive security measures in place for the critical summit in New Delhi, numerous leaders, including Putin and Xi Jinping, are gathering to discuss global issues.
As New Delhi implements intensive security measures and strict traffic restrictions for the 18th BRICS Summit hosted by India over the weekend, leaders of numerous countries have arrived in the capital.
Intensive Security Measures in New Delhi
India's capital, New Delhi, has been placed under a heavy security ring ahead of the BRICS Summit taking place over the weekend, and the streets have been adorned with posters welcoming the leaders.
Approximately 15,000 police officers, 200 companies of paramilitary forces, and over 500 cameras have been deployed for the two-day summit at Bharat Mandapam.
Economic Cooperation and Global Crises on the Agenda
At the eleven-member bloc meeting, the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as disagreements within the bloc, are being comprehensively addressed.
The meeting also puts joint priorities on the table aimed at strengthening commercial ties and economic cooperation.
Bilateral Talks and Leader Contacts
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, visiting India for the first time in six years, is also expected to meet with Modi.
Expanding BRICS Structure and Participants
Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates make up the members of the bloc.
In addition to Putin, Xi, and Pezeshkian, leaders from nine different countries and numerous international organization representatives are participating in the summit.
2026 Presidency and Expectations
Holding the 2026 rotating presidency, India is bringing together the leaders of BRICS members along with partner countries and external invitees.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated in a social media post that he believes the summit will host positive and meaningful discussions for global prosperity.
