Inequality in access to artificial intelligence technologies may widen the literacy gap

Released on the occasion of International Literacy Day, UNESCO data reveals that 739 million youth and adults globally fail to reach basic literacy levels, while drawing attention to how inequality in access to artificial intelligence technologies could further deepen the existing gap.
International Literacy Day Celebrated in Mexico
Proclaimed by a decision of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 1966, September 8 International Literacy Day is being celebrated for the 60th time this year.
Various events are taking place during the program held in Mexico on September 8-9 under the theme of Literacy for People, Planet and Prosperity.
Global Literacy Rates and Gaps
According to UNESCO data, the rate of literate adults, which was 65 percent in 1975, has increased to reach 88 percent today.
Despite this progress, approximately 739 million youth and adults worldwide still do not possess basic literacy skills.
Regional Distribution and the Situation of Women
Of the illiterate adults, 225 million are located in Sub-Saharan Africa and 347 million in the South Asia region.
These two regions are home to more than 77 percent of the world's illiterate adult population.
On the other hand, women make up 63 percent of the illiterate adult population, and 4 out of every 10 children in low- and middle-income countries fail to reach the minimum proficiency level in reading skills.
The Impact of Artificial Intelligence and Digitalization on Literacy
UNESCO reports that the scope of literacy is rapidly changing along with technological developments leading to digitalization, including artificial intelligence.
This situation compels a reshaping of the design methods for literacy-related policies, systems, and programs.
Injustice in Access to Technology and UNESCO's Call
While one-third of the world lacks internet access, the most advanced artificial intelligence models are accessible only to those with infrastructure, language advantages, and paid subscriptions.
UNESCO calls for addressing the transformations of artificial intelligence in education from diverse perspectives and developing joint solutions.
