Nepali Prime Minister Warns of Climate Crisis and Floods at UN
Nepali Prime Minister Balendra Shah emphasized that disasters in his country resulting in the deaths of over a thousand people are a consequence of the global climate crisis.
In his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, Nepali Prime Minister Balendra Shah stated that the fatal floods in the country serve as a clear warning to the entire world regarding climate change and criticized global leaders.
Climate Criticism of Global Leaders
Addressing world leaders at a session held at UN headquarters, Nepali Prime Minister Balendra Shah stated that communities not responsible for the crisis are paying the price.
Heavy Loss of Life and Economic Devastation
In August, a massive flood disaster triggered by melting permafrost killed at least 1,400 people. Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal reported that the country suffered financial losses exceeding 5 billion dollars, equivalent to approximately 15 percent of its gross domestic product.
International Aid and Calls
Stating that Nepal contributes less than one percent of heat-trapping gases, Prime Minister Shah emphasized that international financial aid systems are bureaucratic and inadequate, calling for climate justice. Meanwhile, the United States announced an additional 31 million dollars in aid to Nepal following the floods.
